to have your name put in the Puppy Book.
A few important tips before buying a puppy
1. Are the sire and dam registered?
2. Ask to see the sire’s and dam’s KUSA registration
certificates. Check
the bloodlines and that the correct name of the owner of the dogs
is on the certificates.
3. Ask for the KUSA registration certificate for your pup and be sure that the breeder has signed the back of the certificate before taking it home.
4. Look at the sire and dam before selecting your puppy.
5. Ask if the sire and dam have been tested for deafness (using the
Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response ("BAER") test), for PRA
(Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and x-rayed for hip and elbow
dysplasia. If so, get a copy of the certificates for your records
for future breeding.
6. Ask if the sire and dam have been DNA tested for PRA? If the answer is yes, ask if they are A (clear) B (a carrier) or C (an affected dog). If SAVA tested (a clinical test) check that this test has been done annually from the age of 1 year.
7. Has the entire litter been BAER tested? If so make sure you have a copy of that certificate and check that the microchip number appearing on the test result corresponds to your pup’s microchip number.
8. Ask for the diet sheet for the puppy's diet requirements and see what brand of food they have been fed.
9. Ask if your puppy has been microchipped.
10. Ask for the inoculation book showing all inoculations and deworming dates.
11. Ask the selling price and be correctly informed beforehand of the average recommended price for a registered or unregistered pup.
12. The price of your puppy should include: de-worming every 3 weeks from the age of 3 weeks, 1st inoculations and microchipping at 6 weeks.
13. Ask if there is a Breed Club to join.
14. Do the pups look healthy? Are there fleas or ticks, diarrhea? Is their kennel clean?
15. Watch the litter and how they behave - is there any aggression or happy puppy play?
16. Are the dogs locked up or running around?
17. Are the pups playing with other dogs?
18. Never take a pup too early (the ideal age is 8 weeks and over), as the pack discipline is vital for a young pup before joining its new home and owner.
19. Has the litter been well socialized with other dogs, people, children, different environments and noises?
20. Are there toys and fun things around for the pups to play with?
21. Before buying a pup be absolutely sure that this is the right breed for you. Your commitment to each other is for a lifetime.
